Encouraging Migrants on SIDC Investment: Enrollment Strategies

They asked me if i can testify regarding the enrollment strategies, of course i answered a big YES! Everyday i’ve met a lot of individuals that have different characters and have negative points of view regarding investments…. I took them as a CHALLENGE. When Sidc reached my knowledge and learned about their good business track records i don’t give any second thought and grab the opportunity to become their member. I did the savings until i reached the minimum investments of 100 K and received the certificates when i went home last august 2011.

In my 25 years of journey, I must consider myself a person who had come almost to his final end as a migrant, though weary of the thought that, …once I’ll end up my journey…… & I have questioned, what have I accomplished for myself, done for others and contributed to the community? And I have come to realize that our situation as a migrant is just like a….. “bird in a cage… with the head outside.”

In my experience of attending and facilitating Financial Literacy Seminar here in Turin and beyond the first question being raised before starting the seminar proper was “What are your expectations in this seminar?” and majority would answer “To learn how to handle or manage money” as the title suggest it and some said to learn how to save. And very rare that the second part which is “Addressing Barriers to Reintegration” is given attention .

Meanwhile, executive director Estrella Añonuevo of the migrant NGO Atikha Overseas Workers Communities Initiative, is the top candidate to represent the women sector.
Añonuevo has been running the NGO Atikha since the mid-1990s, the group being a community-based non-profit initiating economic and social programs for overseas Filipinos and their families. Atikha’s work is visible in San Pablo City, Laguna and Mabini in Batangas.

A jam-packed assembly for Atikha and SIDC orientation was held last Monday, May 16, 2011 at Mayantoc Farmers Information Technology Services Center from 9:00 am to 12:15 noon. Eighty five Mayantokenians attended the forum composed of 20 barangay council members, 30 coop leaders, 19 coop members and 16 local government employees.
